Preparation of a termites intestinal tract.
The bubble shaped structure is the fermentation chamber, where
numerous protozoans and bacteria digest the wooden particles.
The fermentation chamber of the termites has a volume of 0.5 to 10 ┬Ál. It is full of diverse microorganisms, which consum all oxygen that penetrates into the chamber and degrade the wood to simple compounds (mostly acetic acid). These are utilisable by the termites.
