Giant sulfur bacteria

Filament tip of a very large Beggiatoa from the Guaymas Basin hydrothermal vents. Bar = 250 µm, dark field microphotograph.
Different from other prokaryotes, many large sulfur oxidizers have vacuoles, in which nitrate is accumulated. This can be used like oxygen as the electron acceptor for sulfide oxidation.
