Foraminifera

"Sand" from the beach of Puerto d'Alcúdia at 50-fold magnification.
In this sample there is not a single sand grain visible. There are only tiny calcareous shells, similar to those of snails and mussels. Actually these are residues of unicellular orgnisms. Foraminifera live in the water or on the ground of the oceans. They are related to the Amoeba. Most of them are small, however, some can grow bigger than 10 mm.
