Spore-forming bacteria, most probably Clostridia in the juice of a rotten plant. In the phase contrast (left) the spores appear as empty eyes, while the differential interference contrast (right) wrongly shows them as raised structures. Actually, spores contain all essential cell components in a densely packed form. They can stay viable for centuries. (Phase contrast 100x objective, 10x eyepiece)
